4. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE LABORATORY

 

4.1. INTRODUCTION

Our cultural heritage relating to the ancient Greek theatre, as well as the contemporary

environmental (and not only) noise pollution are enough reasons to justify the scope of a   

Laboratory of Acoustics in a Greek University. The present Lab of Acoustics dates back to 

the mid. 20th century and is unique in measuring sound insulation and sound absorption   

of building materials in the country, thanks to its special acoustic chambers.

 

4.2.  ACTIVITIES

●  Laboratory measurements of sound insulation, sound absorption, and sound emission  

          levels, in acoustic chambers according to ISO.

Field measurements of sound insulation, sound absorption, sound emission  

          levels, as well as room acoustics measurements.

Acoustic measurements / investigation through computer simulation of sound          

         insulation, noise pollution, as well as room acoustics measurements.          

Subjective acoustic evaluations of the built environment, using advanced methods of   

           analysis of environmental perception (semantic differentiation).

Acoustics projects concerning new developments or remedial work in existing  

          buildings.

● Applications of acoustics as an integral part of environmental design in architecture.

                             

The above activities take place in the context of either educational projects (thesis etc.,)      

 or relevant technical certificates produced on call from the market.

 

 4.3. EQUIPMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE

 There are three reverberation suites. Two of them are suitable for measurements of wall   

 partitions, whilst the third is suitable for measurements of floor finishes. There is also a   

 reverberation chamber of volume 240 m3. Furthermore, there is high calibre calibrated

 equipment, for instance sound level meters of type 2250 and 2270 by B&K. The  

 ‘Investigator’ set of equipment by B&K is employed for the measurements in the  

 reverberation chamber and in the suites. Last, there is also advanced software, such as     

 the CADNA’ for applications concerning environmental noise pollution, and ‘ODEON’ for     

 room acoustics applications and applications concerning sound insulation.
