SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE BEYOND PERFORMANCE: Institutions, Digital Tools, and Decision Power

Over the past two decades, sustainability has become a central ambition in architectural education and practice. Architecture students are increasingly trained to use performance-based tools—such as energy simulation, environmental analysis, and green building certification systems—to improve the environmental outcomes of buildings. However, empirical evidence from practice suggests a persistent gap between sustainable design intentions and realised project outcomes.

This lecture series argues that this gap cannot be explained by technical limitations alone. Instead, it proposes that sustainable architecture must be understood as a governance and decision-making problem, shaped by institutional arrangements, power relations, and the allocation of decision authority within construction projects.

By moving beyond a purely performance-oriented perspective, the course introduces students to a critical understanding of sustainability as a socio-technical and institutional process. The aim is to equip future architects with analytical tools to understand why sustainable solutions often fail to materialise, even when appropriate technologies and design knowledge are available.

– From Technical Performance to Institutional Context: sustainability discourse in architecture – limits of performance-based and tool-centred approaches

Σύντομο Βιογραφικό Σημείωμα

Ο Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής Δρ. The Quan Nguyen είναι Επικεφαλής του Τμήματος Διαχείρισης Έργων και Δικαίου και Διευθυντής του Ινστιτούτου Διαχείρισης Επενδύσεων σε Κατασκευές στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πολιτικών Μηχανικών του Ανόι, Βιετνάμ. Απέκτησε το διδακτορικό του στη Διαχείριση Κατασκευών από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Λιντς (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο) και έχει πάνω από 25 χρόνια ακαδημαϊκής, ερευνητικής και επαγγελματικής εμπειρίας στη διαχείριση κατασκευών και τη διακυβέρνηση υποδομών. Η έρευνά του επικεντρώνεται στη Μοντελοποίηση Πληροφοριών Κτιρίων (BIM), στις ψηφιακές κατασκευές, στην κυκλική οικονομία, στα βιώσιμα κτίρια και στη διαχείριση έργων με βάση την αξία και την απόδοση, ιδίως σε έργα δημόσιων επενδύσεων και υποδομών. Έχει ηγηθεί και συν-ηγηθεί μιας σειράς διεθνώς χρηματοδοτούμενων έργων που υποστηρίζονται από το Βρετανικό Συμβούλιο, τη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Μηχανικών, το Newton Fund και τις Ακαδημίες του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, σε συνεργασία με εταίρους όπως το Πανεπιστήμιο Brunel του Λονδίνου, το Πανεπιστήμιο της Δυτικής Αγγλίας, το Πανεπιστήμιο Heriot-Watt, το Πανεπιστήμιο Manchester Metropolitan και το Πανεπιστήμιο του Salford, ασχολούμενοι με την ανάπτυξη δεξιοτήτων που βασίζονται στο BIM, την ολοκληρωμένη υλοποίηση έργων για πράσινες, οικονομικά προσιτές κατοικίες, την εμβυθιστική μάθηση που βασίζεται στο BIM χρησιμοποιώντας εικονική πραγματικότητα και τις ψηφιακές-κυκλικές στρατηγικές για την απαλλαγή από τον άνθρακα από τα απόβλητα κατασκευών και κατεδαφίσεων. Resume

Assoc. Prof. Dr. The Quan Nguyen is Head of the Division of Project Management and Law and Director of the Institute of Construction Investment Management at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Vietnam. He obtained his PhD in Construction Management from the University of Leeds (UK) and has over 25 years of academic, research and professional experience in construction management and infrastructure governance. His research focuses on Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital construction, circular economy, sustainable buildings, and value-based and performance-oriented project management, particularly in public investment and infrastructure projects. He has led and co-led a range of internationally funded projects supported by the British Council, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Newton Fund and UK Academies, in collaboration with partners including Brunel University London, the University of the West of England, Heriot-Watt University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford, addressing BIM-enabled skills development, integrated project delivery for green affordable housing, immersive BIM-based learning using virtual reality, and digital–circular strategies for decarbonising construction and demolition waste. Dr. Nguyen has published in leading journals such as Building and Environment, Journal of Environmental Management, Construction Innovation and Environment and Planning B, and currently serves on the Editorial Board of Smart and Sustainable Built Environment, the Advisory Board of the International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation, and the Technical Committee of the Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council.
