The museum landscape in the wider Athens area offers ample material for the study of ancient art in direct contact with the works themselves. Building on the knowledge acquired in the compulsory History and Theory courses, we seek in this immersion course to critically approach the multiple meanings of selected works of ancient Greek and Roman art (mainly sculpture): as historical testimonies, as instruments of socio-political action, as aesthetic objects, as technical achievements and as museum exhibits. The course consists of introductory lectures by the teaching team, visits to museums and archaeological sites, oral student presentations and group discussion. At the end of the semester a written student project is handed in, including an analysis of a work, a museological critique of its existing exhibition and a new museological proposal. The assessment is based on this written work and a final written examination.
