Course content:
The main subject of the course is the theory and practice of restorational interventions on ancient monuments, in Europe, Greece and the general Mediterranean region. In particular, discussions will address the philosophy and principals behind restorational interventions and their implementation, as well as the analysis and evaluation of such projects. Discussion topics also include the role of politics in restorational decision-making over the last two centuries. Restorational trends will be shown to correspond with architectural currents of their time. Educational visits to restorational construction sites and to already-restored monuments will be organized. For the final paper, the students will choose a previous or current restoration project, which they will analyze and critique.
