The course starts from the importance of aviation in today’s world and the fascination of flight and travel, to develop into a systematic examination of all the interdisciplinary basic components that constitute the design environment of the modern airport. It is of a seminar nature and addresses the main issues relating to the planning, organisation, architectural composition and poetics of terminals. Issues of aviation technology and economics, aircraft evolution, airport master plan and the typology and architecture of passenger terminals are examined. The terminal building as an architectural monument, responding to a variety of complex programmatic and functional requirements, is called upon to express the symbolic meaning of travel, of flight, but also to act as a cultural landmark. The work of many well-known foreign architects includes a large number of interesting terminal buildings all over the world. The view is placed in the general cultural and social context and the relations and effects of the airport on the landscape, the environment and urban development are addressed in particular. Students produce a short investigative and critical commentary paper.
